VIRTAUS JA MOTIVAATIO: TUNTEIDEN VAIKUTUS IHMISEN KÄYTTÄYTYMISEEN
Motivaatio
Motivaatio säätelee ihmisen käyttäytymistä, sillä ihminen pyrkii tekemään asioita, jotka ovat hänen kannaltaan mielekkäitä. Jos opiskelija mielii päästä koeviikon kokeista läpi, hänen on luettava kokeisiin. Jos kuitenkin vaikkapa fysiikka tuntuu opiskelijasta tylsältä ja tarpeettomalta, hän saattaa lukea fysiikkaa vähemmän ja keskittyä huonommin, koska sen opiskeleminen ei tunnu mielekkäältä. Sen sijaan opiskelijan mielenkiintoiseksi kokema maantieto saa osakseen enemmän huomiota ja koekin menee paremmin, koska opiskelija on motivoitunut lukemaan juuri maantietoa.
Sisäinen motivaatio tarkoittaakin sitä, että ihminen tekee asioita ilman ulkoisia pakotteita tai palkkioita. Silloin hän kokee tekemisen itsessään mielekkääksi tekemisen kannalta. Esimerkiksi akvarellimaalari saattaa työskennellä pelkän sisäisen motivaation voimalla maalausta tehdessään, ellei hänelle makseta työstään mitään. Sisäinen ja ulkoinen motivaatio saattavat toimia myös yhdessä, esimerkiksi ihminen, joka saa palkkaa työstä jonka tekemisestä pitää työn itsensä vuoksi.
VIRTAUSKOKEMUS
Sisäiseen motivaatioon liittyy myös virtauskokemuksia. Virtaus eli flow on tunnetila, jossa ihmisen harjoittama toiminta on ainoa asia, joka merkitsee hänelle sillä hetkellä. Esimerkiksi aika jää toissijaiseksi ja ajantaju saattaa hämärtyä virtauksen ajaksi. Muusikot, taiteilijat, urheilijat ja vaikkapa tietokoneella pelaavat opiskelijat voivat kokea virtauksen, mutta se on mahdollinen melkein millaisessa tilanteessa tahansa, jossa vain ihminen joutuu keskittymään johonkin asiaan ja hän itse sattuu pitämään kyseisestä toiminnasta.
Virtaus ja motivaatio liittyvät ihmisen kehitykseen. Ihminen oppii tehokkaimmin, kun hän työskentelee ja saa onnistumisen kokemuksia tehdessään jotakin osaamisensa äärirajoilla niin, että tekeminen on tarpeeksi haastavaa, muttei liian vaikeaa jotta hän ei kykenisi suoriutumaan haasteesta kunnialla.
Itselleni on yläasteen valinnaiskuviksen opettaja taannoin opettanut että virtauskokemuksia kannattaa kuvataidetta tehdessä pyrkiä kokemaan mahdollisimman paljon, sillä silloin tapahtuu taidoissa eniten kehitystä ja oppiminen käy kuin itsestään. Sitten jossakin vaiheessa huomaa oppineensa jotakin teknisesti hienoa jota ei ole ennen osannut, muttei välttämättä hoksaa missä ja miten sen on oppinut, kun se on tullut siinä tilanteessa luonnostaan. Siksi esimerkiksi piirtämiselle ja muulle taiteenteolle pitäisi antaa niin paljon aikaa, että keskittyä ehtii ja tehtävien asioiden pitää olla tarpeeksi vaikeita: Juuri sitä, missä on huono, pitää harjoittaa.

I fully support not allowing the use or sale of these products to minors… but as adults… we have the right to choose what we put in our bodies. It is a sad fact that many children are hooked on caffeine. I wonder why no one is worried about that? Is it because smoking combustible cigarettes are so much more harmful than soda and chocolate? Probably even though the side affects can lead to obesity. e-cigs are no more dangerous than caffeine products in my opinion. But I would also have no problem with making children abstain from soda until they are 18.
